Microphone test

Ready when you are

Your browser will ask for microphone access. The signal and recording stay in this tab.

Connect your microphone, then start the test.

Digital levels (dBFS), not calibrated sound pressure. A quiet signal alone does not mean your mic is broken.

Hear yourself back

Record up to 10 seconds. Use headphones to avoid feedback.

A few checks fix most silent microphones. Read the full troubleshooting guide.

The browser won’t allow microphone access

Open the site permission control beside the address bar and allow microphone access. Then check your operating system’s privacy settings. In an embedded browser, open this page in a normal browser tab if microphone access is unavailable. Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari require a secure page (HTTPS).

The meter is moving, but a call still cannot hear me

This test confirms that this browser receives your selected input. Your meeting or recording app may use a different microphone. Select the same device inside that app and check its mute and input settings.

For Zoom, use the browser-versus-Zoom checklist.

The signal is quiet or distorted

Move closer and check the microphone’s input gain. Speak normally while watching the meter. Peaks close to 0 dBFS can clip; lower the gain if the clipping warning appears. Noise processing and gain settings can differ between browsers and applications.

No microphone appears in the list

Reconnect the device, check its power, and confirm that the operating system detects it. Close another app if it is using exclusive device access. Grant this page microphone permission, then start the test again.

How private is the recording?

Signal processes audio in your browser. It does not upload audio, recordings or microphone names. Delete the recording or close the tab to clear the app’s copy. A recording you download remains on your device. Hosting still involves ordinary technical connection data; see the privacy notice.

How to test your microphone online

  1. Connect your microphone or headset and select “Start microphone test”.
  2. Allow microphone access, select the input, and speak at your normal distance.
  3. Look for a moving signal and choose “Record 10 seconds” to check playback.
  4. Stop the test when finished. If the result differs in another app, compare its selected input and gain.
